The game of Dominoes is as ancient as other classical board games (Nine Men's Morris, House of Fortune, Chess), oldest of dominoes were found in the sepulchre of Pharaoh Tutankhamen in Egypt. Though the origin of modern Dominoes with 28 tiles can be found in China. The game arrived to Europe in 18th century and was rst played by Italians. Possibly it's where the name of Dominoes comes from. Probably, it was an allusion, as „domino“ is the French name of winter hood being black outside, but white inside. Another explanation of the name is Latin word „dominus“, meaning lord or master. Third version of this name is derived from a traditional mask in Venetian Carnival, coloured in black and white and called „domino“.
The design project KURLAND WOODCAKE dedicated their di erent – Latgalian Dominoes to the region of Latgale and Latgalian language, which is native to nearly 150 000 people, mostly in Latvia. While playing the Latgalian Dominoes you will have a chance to learn 63 new words commonly used by Latgalians.
GAME SET
- There are 28 tiles with unique images and respective names in Latgalian language on them. Each image belongs to one of 7 groups, each with 8 images;
- Game rules and the dictionary with names of every image translated into 4 other languages: Latvian, Russian, German and English.
